U.S. Rep. Mac Thornberry (R-Clarendon) met with a group of local business leaders and public officials here Tuesday morning in his first official visit to Canadian since November 2011. Rep. Thornberry covered a lot of ground in the wide-ranging roundtable discussion—unveiling “A Better Way,” the House Republicans’ blueprint of ideas to address what they consider the country’s biggest challenges, and responding to questions on topics ranging from Texas’ battle with the federal government over Medicaid funding, to border security, a subject the chair of the House Armed Services Committee is uniquely qualified to address.
Thornberry opened the conversation with comments on “A Better Way” as his Deputy District Director Paul Simpson distributed printed copies of excerpts from the plan addressing health care and tax reform. “Our Speaker of the House Paul Ryan believes that we have spent the last 7-1/2 years talking about what we’re against,” Rep. Thornberry explained. “We need to really spend some time talking about what we’re for.”
