Two area races made statewide headlines in Tuesday’s Republican primary voting. Both involved heated three-way contests, with embattled incumbents hoping to avoid costly runoff races. Both came down to the wire, with the victors claiming simple majorities of less than 1 percentage point. And both races featured well-funded challengers, backed by the Midland-based group, Empower Texans.
But a win was a win, for four-term District 31 state Senator Kel Seliger, of Amarillo, and for three-term District 88 state Representative Ken King, who celebrated his hard-fought victory with a hometown watch party at Conejo Gallery in Canadian. There would be no primary runoff for either candidate.
