James Melvin “Jim” Hash was born in Shreveport, Louisiana on April 8, 1936, to Melvin “Slim” and Anna Mae (Long) Hash. Jim passed from this life on June 26, 2024, at the age of 88.

Memorial services will be held at 2:01 pm, Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at the Canadian Methodist Church with Justin Colman officiating. Cremation and arrangements are under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors of Canadian.

Jim attended multiple grade schools due to his dad’s job in the oilfield and the rig moving from Louisiana, through East Texas, and eventually ending up in the Texas Panhandle. He graduated from Perryton High School in 1955 and was attending college at West Texas State University when he was drafted into the Army in 1957. He served two terms in the United States Army and was very proud to be a veteran.

Jim married the love of his life, Davie Marie (Whatley) Hash, in Pampa on August 30, 1963. They lived in Perryton where Jim had several jobs over the years mostly in the oilfield with construction and trucking, including owning his own cattle hauling truck. They moved to Canadian in 1978 when Jim transferred from Perryton to manage E. W. Larkey Trucking. He later went to work for Champ Equipment, and then started his own roustabout service company, 5H Oilfield Service. 

When the oilfield business started declining in the early 1980’s Jim had to look for other ways to provide for his family, so he bought a hay truck and started hauling square bales when he was in his early 50’s. He always wanted to learn auctioneering, so he attended an auctioneering school and started an auction company that focused on equipment and estate sales. Along the way he always had a part-time job and loved driving a truck. From his 50’s till his 70’s he hauled cattle, milk, oilfield tanks, baled hay, catered with the Cattle Exchange, and made donuts at Ma Beasley’s donut shop! 

Although he loved to work hard, his greatest enjoyment came from hauling not only his three children, but many other kids that wanted to go to rodeos, horse shows, and judging contests. Jim and Davie were ever-present in their children’s activities. They coached 4H horse judging, (taking several kids to state competition), sponsored the Canadian High School Rodeo Team, and spent countless hours at football games, stock shows, and other 4H and FFA competitions. For several years Jim announced and auctioneered the Hemphill County Jr Livestock Show and Sale but was always proud that he announced Canadian’s Fourth of July Rodeo for several years. He enjoyed being there for the community whenever a fundraiser or benefit needed an auctioneer or announcer, including putting on a Santa suit when needed. He loved that!

Jim was proceeded in death by his parents, and his wife Davie. 

He is survived by his children; Daylin Hash and wife Tammy of Caddo, Oklahoma, Dayla Cates, and husband Lance of Canadian, Jim Boy Hash and wife Jessica of Kendall, Kansas; Grandchildren, Kashlee Hash and husband Justin Eastwood of Caddo, Oklahoma, Kayla Williams and husband Kyle of Indianola, Oklahoma, Kade Johnson and partner Sergio Guadarrama of Hudson, New York, Jaylyn Hash and Jaytyn Hash of Kendall Kansas, Nathan Harbin and wife Jessica of Ft. Worth, David Harbin and wife Shelby of Caddo, Oklahoma, Ashton Macias and husband Travis of Canadian, Terra Jackson and husband Kannon of Caddo, Oklahoma, Colton Cates and wife Taryn of Shamrock; Great Grandchildren, Treylin Henderson, and Jadyn Eastwood, Kyler and Dexter Harbin, Karter Williams, Caisen Cates, Hazel and Lewis Macias, Kenzington Jackson, Oliver Harbin; and numerous nieces and nephews.
