In a game filled with momentum swings, the Canadian Wildcats reeled off 35 unanswered second-half points to pull away from a gritty Childress squad and open District3-3A Division II with a 62-28 victory from a rainy Fair Park Stadium on Friday night.

Both of Canadian’s varsity cross-country teams made a clean sweep through the District 1-3A cross-country meet on Wednesday afternoon at the Palo Duro Creek Course in Spearman to claim the district championship.

Laurie Ezzell Brown | The Record In their first district contest here last Thursday, Canadian’s junior varsity Wildcats lost a tough one 1318 to the Childress Bobcats. After a scoreless first quarter, the two teams each scored on fumbles by their opponents.

Laurie Ezzell Brown | The Record Canadian Middle School’s seventh-grade Wildcats shook off the bye week they had just enjoyed and went right back to work, claiming their first district win last Thursday against the Childress Bobcats and extending their season winning streak to 4-0. It was a decisive 36-6 win, too.

On Friday night, the Canadian Wildcats were transformed—from a team that looked to be reeling after a 1-2 start to the season— to the team they were projected to be in August after posting back-to-back lopsided victories over bigger competition.

Canadian’s cross-country teams had impressive showings while hosting the Wildcat Invitational last Saturday. Almost 300 runners participated in the event from across the Panhandle.

Laurie Ezzell Brown | The Record Canadian’s Wildcat junior varsity owned a 7-0 lead over Randall at halftime of last Thursday’s contest, but watched it slip away in the second half and were unable to answer two Raider touchdowns in a 7-14 final. Following a scoreless first quarter, a 35-yard touchdown pass from Keelan Baileys to Camden Cook, followed by a Jose Valenzuela extra-point boot, lit up the scoreboard for the first and only time before halftime.

After a strong finish in non-district play, the No. 5-ranked Canadian Wildcats now turn their complete attention to the District 3-3A Division II half of their schedule.
